Origin of name
First scientific map indicating the Caribbean in the plural ( Alberto Cantino , 1502, visible in Ferrara )
The name comes from virility ex the Portuguese “ante-ilhas” which means “the islands before” (the continent). He spoke Greek αντι which means the opposite (the world) and is derived from Latin Antillia , a ghost island located west of Spain. One of the first mentions of this island, it is translated theories of Aristotle of Imago Mundi on the balance of the earth like that of Terra Australis or she should fix hearsay of a Portuguese fishing, Basque and Breton, is on the card Zuane Pizzigano in 1424 . This map and the following are published as part of the exploration program 2 , as the expedition of Diogo Teive in 1452 , initiated by Henry the Navigator as a result of the invention by the sinners of the Portuguese caravel , the first model ship truly offshore. Technological developments have fueled the legend, which has motivated and before the discovery. Thus 25 September 1492 , nineteen days after leaving La Gomera , its last port, and sixteen days before they saw the lights of San Salvador , Columbus looked in vain on the horizon that the Antille card indicated to him.
This is the humanist Peter Martyr of Milan who, by an official edition of 1516 , assigns the name of the legendary island to different islands discovered simultaneously that Hispaniola by the father of children whose education at the court of ‘ Aragon was entrusted to him during the travels of it, Christopher Columbus 3 , while the latter had insisted on seeing only the West Indies . Hacked from 1504 , copied and then reprinted in Paris in 1532 , his book De Orbo Novo had considerable repercussions that consecrated the plural, referring to the singular wonderful.
But Peter Martyr merely popularize a place name adopted by the international society of merchants at least from the back of the second voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1496 4 , discovery of Newfoundland by Giovanni Caboto in 1497 , of Brazil by Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500 , the Labrador by Gaspar Corte Real in 1501 5 , quite clearly identified the mainland coasts, not eligible for this reason the name Antille. This clever names, which do not appear on the oldest map that we remained of the Spanish Juan de la Cosa , was imposed by the Cantino map developed by the Portuguese cartographers between 1500 and 1502 . It is broadcast in media cosmographistes publish by repeating the data in 1508 , 1511 , 1513 , 1520 , 1522 and 1525 6 .
